Hello everyone.

There’s still a chilly wind in the air, but it feels like it’s about to get warmer soon.

Spring is coming. How have you been?

I’d like to share something that actually happened to me regarding a recent issue.

Rather than calling it an “immigration problem,” it’s more about how we relate to foreign residents.

In Bokoi, where I live, there are international students who stay here.

When I go to a nearby shop, I often see one of them working there.

Their Japanese is very good. They work seriously and are thoughtful enough to notice even small details.

When I really think about it, the students who come here—

whether from middle school or high school—

decide to come to Japan and, beyond their regular studies,

they study Japanese hard enough to speak it at the level of our daily conversations.

They come here with hope for their future.

When I realized that, I felt nothing but sincere respect.

Of course, some are young, and among them there are those who may not yet know certain rules or social manners.

I thought quite a bit about how to guide them in those moments.

In the end, adding a small action to a simple word was enough to get the message across.

I was genuinely happy that what I wanted to communicate was understood.

They are working hard, so I don’t want it to become something negative—

if anything, I hope it contributes to their inner growth.

What this experience reminded me of is this:

You never truly understand until you talk.

We shouldn’t let fear or large labels define individuals.

These days, some people say, “Foreigners have bad manners” or “They lack morals.”

But many of us Japanese understand etiquette and cooperation to some extent,

so wherever we go, we can naturally adapt.

If something is considered normal in their culture,

and it bothers you, then perhaps it becomes your role to teach gently.

That’s why, regarding this issue, what we can do as individuals

is to look at our own communities, learn about them, and reach out.

Ideally, we can come to respect one another—that feels like the highest goal.

I once had the chance to exchange messages with someone overseas.

They said, “Someday, I want to live in Japan.”

Without context, it might sound simple.

But when I read that, I felt proud of my country.

At the end of the day, it’s about people meeting people.

Approach within your limits.

If you ever feel in danger, remember that your safety comes first—don’t push too far.

Step by step, we can move closer.

And if we happen to talk about each other’s countries and learn something new,

wouldn’t that be enjoyable?

Maybe the world would look wider—and even more beautiful.
